Canadian Comic Book Histories as Resistant Public Pedagogy
Counter Media And Refusals
Abstract
Inspired by Rancière's politics of aesthetics and politics of education, I consider comic books and related media as forms of resistant public pedagogy, set against conservative and far-right upheavals in public education. First, I explore labour comics and graphic histories that mobilize Canadian labour history as a resource for resistance in contemporary worker struggles. Second, I examine post-Confederation Canadian history from an Indigenous centre in anthology stories by Aboriginal creators. I read these comics as aesthetic interventions that re-imagine hegemonic educational and political structures and as examples of Rancière's concept of the distribution of the sensible.
